Fish(ing)
At Vengurla Bunder, there were a few people line fishing. I was curious and went closer to find this pretty fish which was about to die and maybe become someone's lunch. I have ambivalent thoughts about eating fish- I love seafood and find it hard to give up. Over the years, I have read much about the terrible impact of overfishing and the fish species which are now under threat- not to mention the birds and other creatures that are affected by large scale fishing. It makes me feel uncomfortable when I eat fish, thinking about whether it would've been caught ethically or not- (please, no vegetarian vs non-vegetarian rants on this post).

These kind of choices are also important when you visit a place as a tourist. How many resources are you going to use up? How much respect do you have for the environment there & how much pressure are you putting on it? At a practical level, one person's choices may become irrelevant, but at an ethical level it does matter to me.

i've felt very simlar worries when i see litter in the middle of a forest during a trek or safari. i guess littering is something the tourists should be careful about.

with fish, my attitude towards sea food is exactly what u mentioned. cant live without it :) so, i wont even pretend that i am sad abt fishing! but yes, adaptation of more scinetific methods might help a long way in preserving it for the coming generations.

actually, the problem is a fairly serious one. And probably it's not as simple as giving up fish-eating or not.. Probably, more scientific methods and ways to ensure that in the long term, the ocean can be harvested more sustainably..

Well, we have to worry up to a limit and then leave it, otherwise we will be like the person in the toilet who is sitting and thinking, "Shall I use water and use up a scarce resource but save the trees, or use paper and use up the trees but conserve the world's purified water?" and the person hears a Voice that says, "Will you stop cogitating and congealing and let the rest of us use the toilet?"

yes of course, one has to take some action or the other finally.. It doesn't mean that we should stop thinking about the issue altogether though.
