Rock Eagle Owl

This owl was the first thing I saw when I reached the gardens, much later than I'd planned. Slowly approached it with the scope and got this photo. Watching those fierce orange eyes looking at me with disdain was a humbling experience. What a great way to end two weeks of confinement in the campus..! It was so windy that the scope along with my tripod (quite heavy) fell down. I had a few bad moments but thankfully nothing was broken. One more pic under the cut:

Amazing capture! And good that the scope is OK :)

The only large owl I've seen is the Brown Fish Owl. :(

Great photos Ashbirder! So glad the digiscope is OK, too.

Yathin...can't believe you have not seen the Spotted Owlets and the Mottled Wood Owls at Lalbagh..and there must have been many Barn Owls near your place in Bangalore...think, I am sure you will recollect all the owls and owlets you have seen!

yep, I've seen the smaller and medium-sized owls, but not many large owls. And I forgot to go see the mottled wood owls in lalbagh when I was there. :(

And I am sure you must have seen the Eurasian Eagle Owl in Bannerghatta Forest too..I have spotted it each time I went there and I also saw it in Turahalli. I know you used to go to the Ragihalli area very frequently.

Nopes, I haven't seen the ragihalli/turahalli owls as well - i should have gone with someone who knew their whereabouts. :(

Great shots!
Were you in one of the BNHS Ringing camps in South India with by Dr. Bala ? I vaguely remember meeting one Ashwini way back in the ancient history. Then again we are talking about India so there must be about a quarter million Ashwinis I suppose and you would be one of those that I haven't met!

Hi Ashbirder! Larry from www.thebirdersreport.com . I tried to post a comment with my OpenID but I guess it won't work with your version of Live Journal so I went with "anonymous" but I wanted you to know who I was. Anyway...

Congratulations on a gorgeous shot of an incredibly beautiful bird. I am a huge raptor fan and I would love to see this bird in person. Keep up the good work!
